Proscenium stages, known as the proscenium arch, have an architectural structure, but not necessarily arched in form. Their stages are deep and often raked, meaning that the platform is sloped gently away from the crowd.

The thrust stage area can be semi-circular or half a polygon with any number of sides, rather than being square. These types of stages are commonly used to enhance the degree of intimacy between the actors and the audience.

In-the-round theaters have a central stage area on all sides, surrounded by the audience. The seating is almost never arranged in a circular fashion; instead, it is typically arranged in a square or polygonal pattern. The actors enter between the seats through aisles or vomitories. The scenery is kept to a minimum and strategically arranged so as not to block the audience's vision.
